Peace River Branch Presents the Introductory Soils Course! August 27, 2022, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (PDT/PST), Stewart Lake FSR, PD hours: 8.5 - All Branches are invited to register, BCIA Registrants: $65 per person, After August 18, Non-BCIA Registrants: $130 per person. Registration must be complete before August 21; register today! https://bit.ly/3c81TtB

The course will be a one-day ‘active’ field trip while visiting some sites up the Stewart Lake FSR. The sites may include a natural forest soil, a reclaimed oil and gas site, a community pasture, and some forestry research sites to discuss mechanical site preparation. The field trip would start in the morning with a visit to the undisturbed forest soil profile and discuss the properties of natural forest soils in the area, including soil texture, horizonation, colour, rooting, and other characteristics of soils and sites that are visible in the field and are indicative of soil processes that are important for ecosystem function and affect reclamation strategies. This would involve participants digging a soil pit and making descriptions according to established methods set out in the Ministry of Forest's handbooks. We would complete field forms and discuss the observations. The additional sites would address different management scenarios but still focus on soil description and how the soil properties may have affected the management results. At each site, each group would excavate a small soil pit and carry out site/soil descriptions. Participants should expect to get their hands dirty and be prepared for digging in the soil, which can be arduous!

World Soil Day 2022 (#WorldSoilDay) is held annually on 5 December as a means to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. An international day to celebrate soil was recommended by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. In December 2013, the UN General Assembly responded by designating 5 December 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.
